Portable GPS units have always been popular add-ons for vehicles that did not come equipped with them. The requirements of what a portable GPS unit should encompass (no pun intended) are simple: an easy to use interface, accurate directions and a voice dictating you with enough time to spare so last minute lane changes can be avoided.
Tested in both familiar territory and new surroundings, the Delphi excels at the aforementioned criteria. The interface is very simple to use and very clear. The directions are easy to understand and are not going off every 5 minutes, but rather near intersections/freeway splits or confusion points. In this aspect, we love the reassurance coming from the little device parked up on our windshield (or sitting in the cup holder spot as the case may be), letting us know that it will guide us to our destination quickly and efficiently.
The NAV200 also combines a few other goodies into its 3.5" pocket-sized body. The MP3 player, movie player, calculator, picture reader, and game machine (albeit limited to Othello aka Reversi) provide the user with plenty of options. We found them to be cool add-ons, but not necessary as the primary reason why one would buy the GPS unit. It is solely to get directions. The NAV200 sports a 400MHz processor, and a 1.5GB SD card, and comes preloaded with NAVTEQ maps of USA and Canada.
The only gripe that we had about this unit was that although equipped with a highly sensitive antenna, it took a very long time for the unit to acquire the GPS signal. We did not have an explanation for why this was the case.
All in all, the unit is definitely worth the sale price of $249.99 (original MSRP is $399.99), but not the whole MSRP. If you want to go really fancy, Delphi also sells a Real-Time Traffic Kit for an additional $199.99. Happy travels everyone!
4/5 U's.
