DocuPen RC800
Review by: Kaustav Acharya

First and foremost we apologize for the delay, but we had some technical difficulties: no pun intended here.

We tested the DocuPen a while ago and it seemed to not work very well with the Mac platform. Even on a full charge the pen constantly turned off and didn't process the scanned image at all.   While we are happy to report that a few features have changed, and the pen didn't turn off during scanning, it was very disappointing to see that the pen still only processed about a quarter of the scanned page. We tested the pen on an Intel-chipped Mac Mini running OS-X 10.4.9 with 1GB of RAM, so suffice to say, the hardware specs weren't an issue.   According to DocuPen, the device is cross-platform compatible, so it was hard to see why it didn't work.   We spent some time with tech support one day and they decided to send us another unit.   The new unit arrived and we were happy to see the page actually did scan in its entirety (after a full charge).   The image was indeed clear and exported correctly.

After what seemed to be a long and arduous journey, we were able to get the device to work, and it's indeed a pretty cool device.   It's got grayscale, low-quality, and hi-res modes that allow you to be flexible with how you want to scan your documents.   The RC800 is limited to only 8MBs of flash memory, but does have a microSD slot for more.   We think that it should be equipped with at least 32MBs of RAM, because the flash memory fills up very quickly.   The DocuPen is also sluggish in data transfers and lacks a good user-interface for Macs.   Over all though, this little pen can come in handy while doing research but don't forget to pick up a microSD card for it to be really useful.     The pen also has a hefty price tag of $299.
