    According to the school, Columbia Universiry, School of General Studies is one of the four undergraduate colleges at Columbia University. While students at Columbia College, Barnard College, and the School of Engineering and Applied Science generally go to college directly after high school, students at the School of General Studies must have had a break of one year or more in their education since high school to qualify for admission. The School of General Studies offers a traditional liberal arts education leading to a B.A. or B.S. degree. General Studies students take the same courses and study with the same professors as students in Columbia College, Barnard College, and the School of Engineering and Science. They may choose from majors in over 40 disciplines offered by the faculty of Arts and Sciences. Students are eligible to receive transfer credit for up to 64 of the 124 credits required for graduation. While some General Studies students are in college for the first time, most come to resume degree programs they started but were unable to complete. Current students include former ballet dancers preparing for second careers in law, investment bankers mastering the latest in computer science theory, fashion models majoring in writing in anticipation of careers in journalism, and international students from more than 30 countries. Students may study either full- or part-time and may change their status from semester to semester. The average age of General Studies students is 29.
