"If you already know us then words are not necessary and if you do not know us yet, I am Demetrio Sánchez and I am the Head of Studies of the don Quijote school in Barcelona. I presume that you want to learn Spanish. I can also imagine why you want to learn it: work, study or just for fun which is, by the way, a magnificent reason. I also understand your doubts: Where? Barcelona? Why? The Ramblas, the Barceloneta, The Güell Park, the Sagrada Familia, Gaud’, Dal’, ah! But all that is not enough without human warmth, without people. My colleagues and I know this from our experience, which is why we want to offer you, as much as possible, our personal side in addition to our professional side. We are people who work with people and when we give lessons in Spanish we try to make friends. The decision is yours."
Demetrio Sánchez
Director of Studies, don Quijote Barcelona

Although we aim to keep all schools small, don Quijote Barcelona is an exception. Our school in Barcelona, very popular and celebrating its 10th anniversary, moved to an extremely fabulous new building! An indispensable need we had to satisfy because of further growth! The school occupies an entire 5-story building and is located in the heart of the (city?) centre, on the famous boulevard 'La Gran V’a'.

The school has 65 spacious classrooms all with windows and balconies. The ground floor is dedicated to the teachers' room, multimedia classroom, central meeting and recreational area where you can watch TV, read the newspapers, have a coffee with your fellow students or do your homework.

Reasons for studying Spanish in Barcelona

The city
  • Population: ca.1.510,000
  • Location: North East of Spain.
  • The port of Barcelona is one of the largest on Mediterranean coasts.
  • Barcelona has an international airport.
  • It is historical capital of Catalonia and the second city of Spain.

Cultural/Recreational:
  • The city offers a wide variety of art, a lively street life, an extensive nightlife and an international audience.
  • Barcelona was the home of the summer Olympic Games in 1992, a visit to the Olympic Village is not to be missed.
  • At the end of September, one of the most important celebrations of the city takes place: the "MercŽ" (patron saint of the city). During this time, there are many rock, pop and folk concerts, theatre productions in the street and various sporting activities.
  • Its history is beautifully reflected in the famous "Barrio G—tico", the old town district known as the Gothic Quarter for the treasures house of Gothic monuments found there. It is the site of both historic monuments and modern institutions.
  • Its location implies easy access to Mediterranean beaches and skiing facilities in the Pyrenees.
  • It is Mecca of Spain for modern art and theatre lover. Students can admire the work of Picasso, Mir— and visit the famous "Sagrada Familia", "Parque Güell" or La Pedrera by Gaud’.

Critical comment:
  • As Barcelona is located in Catalonia, the official languages spoken are Castilian and Catalan. Catalan is considerably different from Castilian (the official Spanish language). Naturally students will be taught in Castilian and all locals can speak both languages.
  • The city has a clear metropolitan character, some students can take a while to get used to it.
